ABSTRACT

In this paper, I intend to trace the process of the rise and fall of M. N. Pokrovskii’s historiography. At first, his childhood, his university life, and his social activities as a Bolshevik were explained. And I looked at how he gained a political and academic influence comparable to Stalin's in the Soviet Union after the Bolshevik Revolution. In these activities, of course, his academic ideology as a Marxist played a large role. Nevertheless, it is said that he was influenced by his teacher, Kliuchevskii, in his theory of commercial capitalism. Pokrovskii died in 1932, but his scholarship was completely denied as it was replaced by Stalin’s historiography. After Stalin was criticized in the mid-1950s, his historical studies were naturally rehabilitated. However, even after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the evaluation of his historiography still remains a complex matter.
