AB - This study specifically reviewed the economic areas that Koreans and Japanese wanted to lead in the region through the establishment trends of Masanbu companies, factories, and private businesses during the Japanese colonial period, and the circumstances of each ethnic group. Furthermore, it was attempted to determine the existence of the economic realm of Koreans under Japanese colonial rule by grasping the change in the location of businesses.
Through this study (1) a total of 155 companies were established in Masanbu during the Japanese colonial period, and it was confirmed that both Korean and Japanese companies were concentrated in Wonmasan (=Masanpo), the traditional economic area. (2) A total of 116 factories were built in Masanbu, and in the case of Koreans, the factory site was centered on Wonmasan, while the Japanese used the entire Masanbu. (3) A total of 46 private commercial enterprises established in Masanbu during the Japanese colonial period were considerably reduced compared to the number of companies and factories. (4) What is notable is that the businesses were continuously concentrated in Wonjeong and Seokjeong, the former site of Chochang and the economic area of Koreans among various dongs in Masanbu. In addition, it was confirmed that in the two areas, Koreans formed 17 more businesses on expeditions and 18 on Seokjeong than Japanese.
In short, Masanbu's 'economic backbone' continued from the traditional era to the old crafting grounds of Wonjeong and Seokjeong, and the Koreans not only maintained their economic activities and power in the two dongs despite the systematic and continuous advancement of the Japanese. Rather, it is noteworthy that it took the upper hand.
