ABSTRACT

This article aimed to reinterpret the fake virtuous woman story by paying attention to the man's activities in the story. This story is a work that has gained stability in the process of transmission. However, although it includes the concept of chastity awareness, the male activities that make up the story were analyzed as the dominant ideology, noting that virtuous woman's activities are not the central content of the narrative. For this purpose, the original form of the narrative was abstracted through comparison with each other episodes. And it was divided into the original form motifs, variable motifs, and dependent motifs. Based on the narrative of the original form derived from this, the variation patterns were organized and categorized by motifs to reinterpret yeollyeomun, suicide camouflage, and adultery that secured stability. 10 The fake virtuous woman story reveals social contradictions by "falsifying" the societal order of that era, exposing the existing violent authority by securing legitimacy through the execution of those who broke taboos. Furthermore, the act of incinerating the stone of the virtuous woman can be seen as a critique of patriarchal negative effects, reflecting the fear of the authority of that time who had to maintain their legitimacy and obey the power. Therefore, this story is seen that the men who made virtuous woman were also victims of the ruling ideology and were narrated by reflecting their psychology.
