AB - This study aims at the desirable techniques of translating foreign technical terms into Korean. The author regards the purpose of translating technical terms as the confirmation of semantic equivalence between original terms and their translated pairs, and the effective achievement of functional communication among the researchers of a certain technical field. Of course the successful communication between common people outside the field in question and the related professional persons in that field should not be neglected.
The translators, translating the original technical terms into Korean, should try to use semantic translation methodology, instead of using phonetic transliteration which should be regarded as the last shelter in case a semantic translation were impossible.
If a certain change in the meaning of the original terms happened as time passed, it should ba reflected in the translated terms. In this context the chance to re-translate the technical terms is always available, and it should be.
As the technical terms also belong to Korean lexical component, it cannot be neglected that they contribute to not only the functional communication among related persons in that special field, but also the successful communion with people outside that special field. In this context translators should pay much attention to the total grammatical rules of Korean.
The internal borrowing method that some technical terms used in a field are used in another as the same shape, can make the productive effect in this translating process of the technical terms because the core meaning features are shared between both fields in question.
