ABSTRACT

This study is a historical review and semantic interpretation of the concepts of implied author and narrative communication model. Seymour Chatman applied it to film narrative, and film scholar David Bordwell disagreed, seeing it as unnecessary. The debate continued, but no consensus was reached. The narrative communication model has been heavily criticized, and in particular, the implied author's sender position argument seems to be logically flawed. Nevertheless, Chatman's theory of implied authorship is interpreted as a device to open up the possibility of audience interpretation, and is a promising theory that deserves further research on how to increase its utilization, as it is a theory that is more necessary today as the narrative practices of web fiction and video content that involves many staff members to create a single work.
