ABSTRACT

This paper first reviews the changes in the Five Peaks and their rituals in Korea prior to the Joseon Dynasty and examines the discourse and practices related to the Five Peaks Rituals in early Joseon. From the perspective of dynastic geography, it analyzes the characteristics and historical background of the Five Peaks in early Joseon. The study concludes that the Five Peaks Rituals were one of the most important national projects during the establishment of Joseon as a Confucian state, aimed at emphasizing Joseon's legitimacy and securing its place within the East Asian order centered on Ming China. However, under the policy of asserting Joseon's independence and emphasizing the legitimacy inherited from Goryeo, without interference from Ming China, the Five Peaks Rituals in early Joseon differed significantly from those of China, thereby reinforcing Joseon's unique identity. In this context, the transition from Goryeo to Joseon was a complex historical event that simultaneously reflected both conservatism and innovation, as the new dynasty adopted a Confucian Five Peaks system while inheriting the traditions of Goryeo and Silla.
