ABSTRACT

Martha Nussbaum, well known to us as the capabilities approach, attempts to extend this approach to animals in her book Justice for Animals. This can be said to be a support that allows animals to escape from a impeded life and live a flourishing life. Before expressing her views, Nussbaum critically illuminates previous animal ethics approaches. First, while the anthropocentric approach has created interest in animals that resemble us, there are still limitations in that other animals outside the boundaries remain. Next, the utilitarian approach is correct in that it pays attention to pain, which is a crucial part of animal life, but it has a limitation in that it does not pay attention to the importance of distribution because it emphasizes the sum of pleasure and pain. Finally, the Kantian approach has contributed to suggesting the possibility of seeing the existence of animals as a purpose, but it is also problematic in that it is based on similarities shared with humans. The characteristics of Nussbaum’s capabilities approach, newly presented through criticism of previous animal ethics approaches, are as follows. First, it is worth noting the human-nonhuman animal friendship as an ideal to extend the capabilities approach to nonhuman animals. Second, as a realistic strategy to achieve the ideal, various laws supporting animal capabilities must be enacted and observed.
