ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to examine the influence of affects on the logical processing. More specifically, the current study examine whether the affect of words constituting logical tasks had an effect on the performance of the tasks. In experiment 1, conditional inference task consisting of sentences containing positive, neutral and negative words was performed and the cognitive reflection test-Long(CRT-L) was conducted in experiment 2. The results of experiment 1 showed that the accuracy of negative and neutral word conditions were higher than that of positive word condition. In experiment 2, the performance of the CRT-L with negative word condition was significantly better than positive and neutral word conditions. The results of the current study showed that positive affect of words in sentences interfere with logical processing while negative affect of words help logical and analytic processing. The results suggested that the affect of words affects logical processing through influencing the focus of attention.
