ABSTRACT

This study classifies Goryeo-period earthenware bottles from Gyeongnam tombs into four types based on rim shape, neck length, and body profile, and examines their chronological development using associated ceramic assemblages. In the early period (10th to 11th century), only Type I appears in Masan and Hamyang, exhibiting both everted and upright rims. In the middle period (12th to mid-13th century), Types I–III extend to Geoje, Goseong, Gimhae, and Masan, with hemispherical-rim bottles differing in height based on neck length. In the late period (late 13th to late 14th century), the distribution reaches Goseong, Gimhae, Changnyeong, and Changwon, featuring the new Type IV—standardized at 3–4cm neck width and 20 30cm height—indicating functional and formal stabilization. Morphologically, long-neck bottles evolve toward a lower trapezoidal lateral profile over time, with the point of maximum body diameter shifting downward from the upper/middle to mid/lower zones. The consistent neck width observed in Type IV further suggests deliberate standardization of form.
