ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze newspaper editorials over the past 20 years to examine changes in social discourse. By utilizing the PLAS language analysis program, the research investigates linguistic usage proportions and psychological factors to explore how media outlets have responded to and adapted to social changes over time from a broader perspective. Editorials from the newspapers Hankyoreh and Dong-A Ilbo were collected using BigKinds, a news database platform, spanning the years 2005 to 2024. A total of 40,499 editorials were analyzed through PLAS. The study period was divided into four intervals to analyze changes in major linguistic and psychological dimensions. Usage proportions, which indicate relative importance, were compared, and differences between media outlets with distinct political orientations were also examined. The analysis revealed patterns of change in linguistic and psychological factors over the past two decades. Hankyoreh demonstrated a tendency to emphasize communication and social processes, whereas Dong-A Ilbo focused more on calls to action and topics related to workplaces and employment, highlighting significant differences in editorial approaches.
