ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore medical social workers’ perceptions and experiences regarding counseling practices, and to identify the meanings and challenges associated with them. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with 15 medical social workers who had more than five years of experience working at general hospitals or higher-level medical institutions between January and March 2024. Through thematic analysis, four major themes were identified: (1) counseling as the foundation of practice, (2) the instability of counseling within the medical organizational context, (3) the distinct characteristics of medical social work counseling, and (4) conditions for sustaining a counselor identity. Based on these findings, the study suggests the necessity of establishing institutional foundations such as the conceptual definition, standardization, and health insurance reimbursement for medical social work counseling, along with strengthening practitioners’ counseling competencies through improved education and training systems.
