ABSTRACT

Poet Seon Kwan Lee and ecological philosopher Jong Cheol Kim grew up in the modern city Masan, their hometown. Lee, a student at Masan University, and Kim, a student at Masan High School, used to associate with each other. Their main interest was literature, particularly poetry. From 1961 the newspaper Masan-Ilbo established a literary section called ‘Student Literay Forum’ , to which both of them contributed several poems and essays from 1961 to 1962. Their works, published in the Masan-Ilbo revel the origins of ecologist poet Lee and ecological philosopher Kim. This essay examines the origins of them. It can be said that Lee’s poems, featured in the Masan-Ilbo later provided a crucial window into his poetic devices and the origins of his ecopoetry and Kim’s poems and essays revealed a profound depth of thought despite his young age, which also showed signs of becoming an ecophilosopher later in life. The modern city Masan once boasted outstanding scenery, but due to industrial development in the 1970’s, the environment was destroyed, and Masan Bay suffered severe pollution, making it impossible for fish and shellfish to survive. While the beautiful landscape of the city and the problems of industrialization provided the context for Lee and Kim’s ecologism, their essential basis was the poetic sensitivity they possessed in their childhood. Kim praised poet Lee’s poetic sensitivity as an “Original Sense of Life”. This fundamental sense of life also forms the basis of his ecological philosophy.
