ABSTRACT

This study focused on the format and attitude of North Korean youth in accepting the Korean Wave and structurally explored significant differences according to regional and class environments. To this end, we conducted an in-depth analysis of 15 youths from across North Korea who had been members of North Korea’s political organizations, the “Boys’ Union” and “Youth League,” during the Kim Jong-un era and defected after 2017. Despite North Korea’s surveillance, the acceptance of the Korean Wave continued to take on a continuous pattern, actively utilizing roundabout means to seek out new culture. The results of the analysis imply the following for North Korean youth in accepting the Korean Wave. First, it is expanding the base of the acceptance environment based on the network centered on point organization. The acceptance of the Korean Wave is connected to the cultural desire to pursue a new culture. Second, when the social status is stable, it emerges as a more gradual form of narcissism and plays a cultural leading role in North Korean society. The perception that the Korean Wave is a symbol of the future of North Korea was expressed evenly throughout. Third, the cultural differences between the South and the North are a product of division and confrontation, and they result in differences in cultural expression forms. The theme of neglecting the socially disadvantaged creates negative perceptions of South Korea and generates rejection. The attitude toward accepting the Korean Wave is not one-way, but rather two-way in a complex form.
