Needs Analysis about Learning the Korean Language for Chinese Students in Gwangju

ABSTRACT

The goal of this study is to analysis the degree of need for Chinese students to learn the Korean language for academic purposes in Gwangju. The study’s subjects were 502 Chinese students studying the Korean language at five universities located in Gwangju province. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that included questions about the general characteristics and learning state of the Korean language from June 2 to 12, 2008. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/PC+ program. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The highest need of Korean language learners is "TOPIK." The subjects want to take a course on TOPIK (0.90). The subjects want to takea course through the school website (0.88) and join a study group to study the Korean language (0.82). 2. At the lower level of response, subjectswant to take a course on the Korean language because: it is needed to take a course in their major (0.13), the teachers are kind (0.18), and teachers encourage students in class (0.20). 3. The highest scores based on factors are for the factor of learners (0.62), factor of environment (0.53), factor of teaching-learning method (0.48), and factor of teachers (0.36). The results are useful as basic data to set up a plan for developing Korean language education at universities in local Korean cities. Further studies need to apply these results in various local cities for Korean language education for foreigners.
