ABSTRACT

This study identifies the patterns and characteristics of media education research in Korea by analyzing a total of 117 studies published between1984 and September 2010. This study is guided by the following research questions: First, how has media education research in Korea changed over time? Second, what are the main research fields? Third, what are the main research topics? Finally, what are the main research methods?Only 14 studies (11.9%) were published before 2001, and a total of 103 (88.1%) were published from 2001 to September 2010. This indicates that media education research in Korea became active only after 2001. Further, there were more pedagogy-related studies than mass communication-related ones, and studies focused mainly on educational processes and instruction methods. The dominant research method was data and document analysis. Based on the results, this study proposes appropriate research methods and suggests some avenues for future media education research.
