ABSTRACT

This study investigates the factors that influence depression and school adjustment in grandchildren from grandparent-grandchild families and examines group differences according to developmental stages by analyzing a sample of 201 grandparent-grandchild pairs. The results obtained using SPSS/WIN 14.0 indicate that self-esteem, adult-role burdens, the perceived social stigma, the duration of the grandparent-grandchild family arrangement, and the number of siblings are significantly related to depression in grandchildren. Further, self-esteem, adult-role burdens, and the perceived social stigma are significant predictors of school adjustment. Finally, the factors influencing depression and school adjustment in grandchildren varied according to their developmental stage. The results have important implications for practitioners and policy makers attempting to provide social support for grandchildren from grandparent-grandchild families.
