ABSTRACT

It is generally believed that the spread of civil journalism in China prompted the weakening of authoritarianism. However, this article is an attempt to disprove the positive relationship between the spread of civil journalism and democratization in China. The civil journalism has relatively weakened the power of state-owned and state-governed media whose information is tightly controlled by the Chinese Communist Party Government. Nevertheless, the civil journalism has neither displaced the traditional journalism, nor contributed to the democratization in China. This article is to show that the spread of civil journalism has not prompted the democratization in China. Instead, it proves that the implicit compromise between the party-state and civil journalists has been delaying the democratization in China.
