ABSTRACT

This study aims at examining whether or not the intended consequences of civic education are embodied. In detail, it attempts to find out whether civic education affects the level of electoral concerns, electoral knowledge, and subjective policy differentiation, thereby increasing the possibility of voter turnout. Utilizing survey data on the 17th presidential election of Korea, it finds out that civic education works, rather in opposite to the existent literature. However, the significance of civic education differs whether one analyzes electoral concerns, policy differentiation or political knowledge. This study concludes, therefore, that although civic education has an influence on voter turnout, its impact will be different in regards to how civic education is taught.
