ABSTRACT

This study examines the frequency and content of information in eight major newspapers with regard to Korea's 18th presidential election. The study was conducted by analyzing the frequency of content types. It classified newspaper articles regarding Park Geun-hye and Moon Jae-in, the major party presidential candidates in the election, as "general election information," "personal information," and "election pledges." The intense coverage of the two candidates is interpreted as a reflection of the short official campaign period for an important presidential election. The frequency of election stories in the eight newspapers occurred in the following order: "general election information," then "personal information," then "election pledges," the subject of only 20.4% of the stories. It is argued that this weighting reflected a higher concern with the negative images of the candidates than with serious information regarding election pledges.
