ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the effects of nationalistic emotions in the framing of Korean and Chinese newspapers by comparing coverage by Korea’s Chosun Ilbo and China`s Global Times of an issue that could reflect chauvinistic attitudes in the two countries’ media. Specifically, it probes the coverage of skirmishes during the torch relay within Korea prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The Chosun Ilbo and Global Times both formally emphasize objective news reporting, but each paper expressed nationalistic emotions in framing the issues with regard to the conflict, countermeasures, national prestige, and morality. This gap between theory and practice shows the nationalistic perspective at work when trying to interpret and understand the same case. The framing effect for eliciting public opinion in favor of the local base is obvious. Both papers framed the issue to shape public opinion in favor of their own country.
