AB - This paper is to review military ships that used by the Goryeo and Mogol Combined Forces in the event of invading Japan in the year 1274 and 1281. Given that all the 900 military ships used during the invasion were all constructed in the Goryeo Dynasty, this event is very significant in studying Goryeo’s foreign relations and its shipbuilding history. To date, however, most of research works have not carried out in-depth study on this event and studied it with Japan-centered point of views. Therefore, Goryeo and its military ships have not been well understood.
Against this backdrop, this paper looked into military ship building practices in Goryeo and conducted site visits to shipbuilding sites, Jangheong(長興) and Buan(扶安). This paper refuted the claim that most of ships mobilized in the first invasion were not newly built and proved that ship building were actually conducted in those shipyards in a large scale. In addition, this paper also developed a discussion that some of military ships featured in Japanese account Moko Shyurai Ekotoba(蒙古襲來繪詞) at the end of 13th century were actually from Goryeo. To date, military ships in Moko Shyurai Ekotoba were predominately regarded as the ones built in South China and many argue that those are quite apart from the ships made in Goryeo. Therefore, Moko Shyurai Ekotoba has not been received much attention in studying military ships of Goryeo.
This paper has put a considerable importance in ship building sites in Jangheong and Buan and developed in-depth and very detailed discussion to prove that military ships features in Moko Shyurai Ekotoba are actually from Goryeo. Based on this, this paper has laid a foundation to use the account in future studies and in this point, this paper has a great significance.
