ABSTRACT

Sejo, the 7th king of Joseon, had broken the rule that the royal family members can not be government officials. The family members who were not descendents of Taejo(the founder of Joseon dynasty) could be appointed as government officials like other yangban bureaucrats because they were not engaged in the king's lineage, however, the direct descendents of Taejo could not. Sejo declared vigorously that he would engage anyone of ability even royal family members and some of them were assigned to do a military task generally. The first step to engage royal family was divided them into two parts-inner and outer-according to their lineage. From the beginning of his reign, Se-jo classified royal family and it was for using them as military officers who would strongly support king. In the later period of Sejo reign, royal family was assigned to be military officials. At first, Ikhyon-gun took the responsibility of temporary commander in training tactics (Gang-mu) in 1461 and some royal family acted as commanders in training filed. After that, royal family was appointed as formal military officials in many parts. Yangban bureaucrats resisted against Sejo's policy, though, he had ignored it and kept going on assigning royal family. Simultaneously, Sejo speared no efforts to cultivate royal family's diverse military ability. The name of Jin-jong, Sa-jong, Im-jong and Won-jong had appeared from 1463 and it was assumed that what the role and duty were. They were soldiers in charge of training tactics, shooting arrow and guarding and it means that Sejo wanted to endow royal family with military role in the late period of his reign. A-jong was most trusted family group by Sejo and it was growing up to be influence of court. The most clear evidence of exposing Sejo's intention using military power of royal family was the suppression of Lee si ae's rebellion in 1467. There was a rumor that the most reliable bureaucrats were engaged to the rebellion and Sejo finally promoted his young nephew Guiseoung-gun(龜城君) as the supreme commander to put down the rebellion. The situation was serious and Sejo declared that he would go to the front for himself. Although he could not put an idea into practice, royal family was the only group whom he could rely on at the moment. After subjugating of Lee's rebellion, Guiseoung-gun was promoted to be supreme minister as royal family. A chain of events was the result of Sejo's efforts to put royal family as king's supporters with military forces.
