ABSTRACT

This thesis is the study on an investigation of how Baekje dynasty had responded to the threats of Goguryeo advancing southward after Baekje relocated its capital to Woongjin. Based on the archeological artifacts and historical materials in the literature, the study firstly traced the development of the front line between Baekje and Goguryeo. The mountain fortress of Namseonggol, Cheongwon and the Wolpyeong-dong relics of Daejeon indicate that Goguryeo moved down even to Woongjin, the relocated capital of Baekje at that time, even though it was temporary. Baekje made two choices to stop Goguryeo from advancing south further and defend its capital: firstly it built castles to protect the capital. One good example of that was a large-scale construction project during the reign of King Dongseong. The second option was that Baekje formed an alliance with the neighbouring country, Shilla through the marriage of two dynasty's families in order to build up robust alliance that provide Baekje with military power for stopping Goguryeo's invading to the south toward the new capital. In the middle of threatening of Goguryeo to the new capital of Baekje, the construction of castles as one of the defensive measures helped Baekje dynasty restore the collection system considerably and achieve stabilization of the country. Through its cooperation with Shilla, Baekje was able to defend itself from Goguryeo's invasion effectively and later exhibited its status home and abroad by giving assistance in reverse Shilla being invaded by Goguryeo. The events of Goguryeo's capturing Hanseong and advancing south were the challenges that the kings of Baekje must deal with on the one hand and also the reasonable backgrounds for Baekje's rebuilding its defensive system on the other hand.
