ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the Korean force's local language education and utilization during the Vietnam War. The acquisition and utilization of local language in military's overseas dispatch is just as important as combat skills. In particular, if the aspect of war is not a battle, but a high proportion of civil operations, language will be an important tool for maintaining good relations with the local people. This was also considered important when the Korean troops dispatched the Vietnam War. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the education of Vietnam language was systematically conducted in Korea and in Vietnam. In Korea, a Vietnamese Communication book was distributed to all soldiers who were supposed to dispatch in the war zone of Vietnam. And, they had systematic preparations for soldier who were to be assigned to a specific position. In addition, in Vietnam, a Vietnamese language education school was established in the Vietnamese language school of Saigon and the Korean army unit, and the Vietnamese language was taught. Through this process, a total of 4,519 persons had been cultivated as the Vietnamese language human resources in Vietnam. The Korean military training program was carried out at the language school with the support of the US Army. This study has not been attempted in the previous studies and can be meaningful in that it was attempted through this paper. It will also be an important reference case for the ROK military's preparations for dispatch troops overseas.
