ABSTRACT

Humanitarian assistance operations are a key mission of the military forces, both in wartime and peacetime. In particular, with the continued regional armed conflicts and large-scale natural disasters since the end of the Cold War, domestic and international demands for military humanitarian assistance have been increasing. The ROK Air Force has also responded to this trend by continuously expanding its humanitarian role, focusing on its transport aircraft fleet, since the Korean War. However, with the exception of a few non-combatant evacuation operations that have recently garnered media attention, comprehensive and systematic research on these activities has been limited. The purpose of this study is to examine the foreign humanitarian assistance(FHA) activities conducted under the leadership of the ROK Air Force since the Korean War. Specifically, in this theses, the Air Force's humanitarian airlift operations are categorized into three types: "relief supplies and personnel support," "non-combatant evacuation operations," and "aeromedical evacuation." This study comprehensively examines the evolution of the Air Force's transport aircraft fleet and the current status of each type of operations. Based on this analysis, it briefly presents the future development directions related to the ROK Air Force's humanitarian assistance activities.
