ABSTRACT

This study reevaluates the Battle of Kumsong—commonly examined at the operational or tactical level—by analyzing its strategic significance through the relationship between frontline developments and the armistice negotiations. Using transcripts of the armistice talks, the study examines changes in the frequency of recess proposals and shifts in tone, identifying clear correlations between battlefield dynamics and negotiation behavior. A quantitative analysis shows that after the battle began, the UNC adopted a notably more assertive posture, and both sides intensified their efforts to secure rhetorical initiative. A qualitative analysis of tonal shifts was then carried out to examine whether there was a change in negotiating leverage in the wake of the battle. In addition, the study compared the ROK’s release of POW with the Battle of Kumsong from the perspective of tone analysis, reassessing the relative magnitude of each event. The study concludes that the final phase of the Korean war was not a meaningless attritional struggle but a strategically pivotal event that continues to shape the security environment of the Korean Peninsula. These findings offer implications for contemporary policy toward North Korea and contribute to broader understandings of how battlefield conditions interact with negotiation processes in the termination of modern conflicts.
