ABSTRACT

In the realm of researches on Chinese grammar history, vocabulary history and etymology, language of Yin and Zhou Dynasty is well worth attention. The reason is that so far as what we have of reliable language materials, Yin and Zhou Dynasty is the earliest period in Chinese language history that we can trace back. A sure knowledge of the language facts of this period is helpful for us to know the successive relation and new phenomenon in language of the following period. Ever since West Zhou Dynasty, polysyllabic words have always been increasing in number and word-building has shifted from monosyllabic words to polysyllabic words. Therefore, we try to understand the word-building of polysyllabic words in West Zhou Dynasty through the research on inscriptions on West Zhou Dynasty bronze ware.
