AB - Recent research on “Seolmundae Halmang” (Grandmother Seolmundae), a folk tale of a female giant indigenous to Jeju Island, has tended to focus on exploring the mythical genealogy of the titular character. With the vast majority of scholars in the academic circles supporting a theory that Seolmundae Halmang was a later transformation of a creator goddess, a minority of opinions grasping this character’s genealogy differently has been presented as well. In contrast, a relatively few have examined the Seolmundae Halmang legend as a literary work, posing the question of the significance associated with or bestowed on the tale as it was enjoyed within the groups that have transmitted it. Because the story of Seolmundae Halmang was not perceived as that of a creator goddess in the space where the tale was transmitted, it is necessary, in terms of research history, to examine the position occupied by this personage in the imaginative world of the legends in Jeju Island and the utility of her legend. Consequently, the present study has classified the transmission of the Seolmundae Halmang legend per type and, based on this, sought to examine the legendary significance of the tale. The present study has discussed the legendary utility of imagining giants, the significance of the “drowned giant,” and the depiction of a female giant as well as the gender issue.
