ABSTRACT

This research attempts to look for the way how Anāpānā Sati is applied to the modern counselling practice. First, we presented the necessity of Anāpānā Sati practice in relation to the restrictions associated with MBSR and MBCT which have been applied to the 'mindfulness meditation' of psychotherapy. The limitation of MBSR and MBCT is that it is hard for clients who have not been disciplined to get mindfulness before approaching the stage of calmness. Second, we studied the principle and the stage of Anāpānā Sati practice. Third, we have proposed the application of Anāpānā Sati practice to the counselling Anāpānā Sati practice makes the clients calm and makes them experience "the immediacy of being". With calmness and getting realized, the clients would open the eyes to see their consciousness and presence very clearly. Anāpānā Sati practice also makes the clients connect to the inner world of them, to the other people and the world. At this point, the counsellor, who already has a pure mind already, can be changed into a mirror to illuminate the clients' mind without any obsession and repulsion. From this research, we aim to confirm that Anāpānā Sati practice is used to train counsellors and to heal the clients in the counselling scene.
