AB - Schopenhauer examined human existence, based on his metaphysics of Will. This paper is to establish his examination as ‘Schopenhauer’s Dasein-analysis’ and deepen our understanding of human-Dasein. Schopenhauer held that it is the reality of suffering that leads us to engage in philosophizing. In suffering, human beings, as a metaphysical animal, come to investigate into its origin. According to Schopenhauer, the origin of suffering is the same as that of the world. In his philosophy, both of them are integrated in what[essentia]-question. He analysed our self-consciousness, submitting Will as the answer to the question. In the fathomless depth of our consciousness, thing-in-itself, in the form of time, manifests itself as the acts of will. Therefore, in Schopenhauer’s ontology Sein und Zeit is Wille und Zeit. Will is the essence of all beings. Will as thing-in-itself reveals itself as the will-to-live in organisms. Humans as organisms are the locus in which the will-to-live is revealed, that is, Da-sein. Thus, on the horizon of temporality, Will reveals itself as the fundamental existential definitions of human-Dasein, which includes thrownness[Geworfenheit], bodyhood[Leiblichkeit], and the factuality of suffering[Faktualität des Schmerzes]. This analysis discloses that human-Dasein is ‘Dasein of the body thrown into suffering’. In Schopenhauer’s philosophy, essence lies in existence. The essence of Will is unfolded as concrete existential modes of human-Dasein.―Excavated as the former are immanence, cannibalism, and purposelessness; then, established as those concrete modes are selfishness, hunger and reproduction, and boredom; and finally, as human-Dasein’s supreme existential mode wherein his or her understanding of Being is revealed, the heart of compassion.
