AB - The purpose of this study is to excavate and construct Herders views on the methods of education. The author as a historian of philosophy and education intends to discover and formulate Herder’s insights into the methods of education that he had formed and described in view of the interface between philosophy and pedagogy by his doing philosophy and pedagogy, and that remain hidden and scattered in his unsystematic fragmentary writings dealing with philosophy and education. In this paper the author attempts to bring forth not a destructive but a constructive interpretation of what Herder means and understands under the main theme, i,e. the Methods of Education, which is categorized by the author in the following three sub-themes: ① Übung combined with discipline. ② Res ante Nominem und Nomen ante Rem. ③ wahrnehmende Erfahrung und denkende (und urteilende) Vernunft. In this study the author is intent on bringing out Herder’s opinions on the methods of education by his conceptualizing and theorizing what Herder had thought and written on the methods of education in the ordinary language, and by his drawing on such influential philosophers as Aristoteles, Descartes, Comenius, Rousseau, Kant, Husserl, Heidegger and Wittgenstein with a view to reviving these classical philosophers as well as Herder in the thematic area of the methods of education. This article purports to make clear the relevance and significance that Herder’s meaningful insights into the methods of education are implied not only in the history of philosophy and that of education but also in this global life world in which we as citizens of a world community as well as of a nation, and in which we have a moral duty to educate ourselves through self-critic of reason toward ourselves.
