ABSTRACT

Suffering is an integral part of human life. This paper looks at specific cases of victims of sexual slavery imposed by the Imperial Japanese military to highlight the importance of a Humanities therapeutic approach to therapy. Humanities therapy, unlike other alternative therapy that focuses on the suffering of the individual, places importance on the social suffering. In this paper, the documentary film by Tiffany Hsiung, “The Apology” is used as the main text to review the need for a Humanities therapy. The film “The Apology” focuses on the anecdotes of sexual slaves from Korea, China and the Philippines who were victimized by the Imperial Japanese military. The three victims suffered from pain/suffering due to the experience and memory. They hope to heal from it, but their approaches to the suffering are different. Cao(China) stays quiet, while Adella(Philippines) had some of the suffering healed through a victims’ group. Wonok Kil(Korea) remains active by tapping into social support and empathy from the society. Their different attitudes can be better understood when looked at from the level of sharing individual suffering, empathy and support from others, social solidarity and communal healing. In the case of victims of sexual slavery imposed by the Imperial Japanese military, healing must occur simultaneously on the individual, collective and communal levels. Only then true healing can occur.
