ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to examine what efforts must be made for more translated Korean literature to enter the international literature market and become successful, based on the success of The Vegetarian by Han Kang in the English-speaking publication market. Thanks to the literary and commercial success of The Vegetarian, Korean literature could enhance its reputation in the target cultures and provide positive prospects on the globalization potential of translated Korean literature among target readers. In order for minority literature such as Korean literature to be accepted more successfully by various readers in the U.S. and Europe with such positive potential and to have more voices heart, analysis on the responses as well as perspectives on the translated literature in the target cultures must be preceded. To achieve this goal, the paper aims to examine the forms of readers' acceptance of Korean literature by dividing the layers into experts, media, and readers and by analyzing their various discourses.
