ABSTRACT

According to systemic functional linguistics, it is required to focus on the linguistic use in context of culture and context of situation in order to analyze a text completely. This study analyzed what is common and different between Korean and Chinese weather forecasts from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics. This study analyzed the cultural context and situational context conceptualized as genre and register, the transitivity for ideational function as a linguistic form, the mood for interpersonal function, and the Thema-rhema for textual function. What was common between Korean and Chinese languages was the same genre of weather forecasts. The differences were found in field, tenor, and mode. In context of culture, there were differences in schematic structure. In context of situation, the importance of forecast content in field was different. In transitivity analysis for ideational function, importance levels of existential process and material process were similar in Chinese language, whereas the importance level of material process was higher in Korean language. In addition, the importance level of mental process in Korean language was higher than in Chinese language. This study is meaningful in the point that it conducted the first analysis on Korean and Chinese forecasts from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics.
