ABSTRACT

This paper aims to expound J. L. Moreno’s psychodrama as the cultural psychotherapy and to secure cultural therapeutic areas by informing its significance in the history of psychotherapy. It mainly takes a way to introduce concepts that help us understand psychodrama as cultural therapy through the study of Moreno's literature. Before Moreno, psychotherapy had treated individual inner psyche, and had approached this invisible psyche with a ‘language’ and treated it with the construct of ‘self’. Moreno has found that there is not only the inner psyche but also an area of ‘inter-psyche’, based on the view of ‘spontaneous human’. Inter-psyche can be visualized as ‘tele relation’ that represents preferences between the parties, and can be treated through ‘role relation’ that indicates what they actually act to each other. He diagnosed pathology as ‘social pathology’ or ‘cultural pathology’ in that pathology appears as a cultural factor among the parties, and devised a ‘psychodrama’ that introduced the parties and their role in psychotherapy. In other words, psychodrama is a ‘cultural psychotherapy’ for treating social or cultural pathology using the tele relations of the parties as a guide, analyzing their role relations, and consisting of spontaneity training for more appropriate role acting. Cultural pathology and cultural therapy may be applied to two people, a larger community, and even the entire human race, depending on the size of the parties concerned, which implies the significance that psychotherapy is possible for the entire human race. The significance of this paper is to find the ways to move from a pathological society to a therapeutic one by securing a sphere of cultural therapy.
