ABSTRACT

It is said that the South-east Asia’s early centralized monarchies were established by the religious momentums provided by the Theravadas Sangha(僧伽). We can see the process of centralizing procedures by analyzing the Rituals of Sanghas. Rituals are regarded as a principle of reciprocity(互酬性) by the anthropologists. Between the Kings and the Sanghas, when they had succeeded to seek the reciprocal relationships, showing the Rituals(儀禮) which both the King and Sangha participate in to the people of the nations, they expect that the people who want Buddha’s reliefs would support the Kings and Sanghas. It provides the reason why the Buddhist Rituals are so popular in South-asia even nowadays.
