AB - The most important factors in maintaining and transmitting the Sect would be the daily ceremonies and meditations of the Sect. As in Guoqingbailu(國淸百錄), six and four sitting meditations were performed thoroughly as the Tiantai Sect’s ceremonies and meditations. Six Buddhist chants included deferential greetings(敬禮) and universal obeisance(普禮), while sitting meditations included samatha and vipassana(zhiguan) as suggested in Cidi Chanmen(次第禪門) and Mohe_Zhiguan(摩訶止觀).
The Tiantai Sect was largely influenced by ceremonial repentance and tao(行道法), which were popular during the Northern and Southern dynasties. This ceremonial practice(儀式修法) was combined with other methods of practice, such as Buddhist protocols including veneration and repentant incantation(呪法), and it was ritualized primarily for benefits in the current world such as curing disease(治病) or mitigating disasters(除災).
Qing Avalokiteshvara Sutra, Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sutra, and Vaipulya Sutra in Guoqingbailu include not only traditional chants, ceremonial repentance, and incantation but also rituals added with sutra reading and practical contemplation. These ritual characteristics of the Tiantai Sect are well described in four modes of meditation in Mohe Zhiguan and the excerpt book the Confessional Samadhi of the Lotus Sutra(法華三昧懺儀). These rituals by the Tiantai Sect were combined with veneration and practice, Buddhist rituals’ two original purposes, greatly helped Buddhist practitioners to learn a complicated practice of zen(zhiguan) as a routine ritual, and had a tremendous effect on the way Tiantai patriarchs practiced Buddhism in the following years.
