AB - In Chinese, the color words associated with women’s makeup are white, red, purple, yellow, turquoise, and black. Among these, red is the most robust, with various terms associated with red makeup according to the concentration of the color. Red makeup has always been understood as indicating heavy makeup, but it has also become a metaphor for a beautiful woman.
White makeup consists of white powder applied to the face, giving it a pure and clean feeling. Also called a “jade face”, a white and clean woman’s face is a metaphor for the beautiful jade stone. White is a new term that is used to indicate a beautiful woman with white skin, and the color white when referring to a woman’s skin has had a positive connotation since ancient times as well as today.
Yellow makeup refers to the golden ornamental tones of the Buddha statue in the form of yellow powder makeup, and carries the meaning of beauty, showing some influence of Buddhism on Chinese women’s aesthetics. Yellow makeup has later been added in the form of yellow decoration of the forehead called “huahuang” and is a symbol for a beautiful woman. “Maiden” (黄花闺女) and “huahuang” are terms that are used to refer to women that are related to makeup characteristics.
