ABSTRACT

In Joseon, Western science and technology were rejected as ‘Anti-Confucianism(邪学)’ because they thought it was related to Catholicism. However, at the end of the 19th century, when imperialist invasions from western countries and Japan began in earnest, the Enlightenment Party insisted on accepting ‘science’ and ‘democracy’, which are the foundations of ‘civilization’. Yoo Gil-jun, a representative person of the Enlightenment Party, argued in Seoyugyeonmun that education should be supported in order to accept 'science' and 'democracy'. This paper deals with Yoo Gil-jun's perspective on 'science', which has not been covered much in previous studies. In order to achieve this purpose, this paper will examine why Nishi Amane and Fukuzawa Yukichi in Japan translated ‘physics’ and ‘nature philosophy’ into Neo-Confucian terms ‘Gewu(格物)’ and ‘Qiongli(窮理)’. Next, 2) how these concepts were accepted and affirmed in Yoo Gil-jun's Seoyugyeonmun, and 3) how Western science and technology were affirmed as 'practical studies'. This work is expected to give a beginning to learn how, who has been educated in Neo-Confucianism, was able to affirm Western civilization and science and technology and insist on learning the West.
