AB - Erasmus’s The Praise of Folly is a work more than a satire, which criticizes the corrupt social, ecclesial state of the age to which the author belonged. This work can be best understood in continuity with the author’s other works, which are centered around the idea of philosophia Christ, the central notion of Erasmus’s religious thought. Erasmus’s philosophy of Christ summerizes his Christian humanism, synthesizing Greek and Roman culture and Christian Bible. Classical mindset, especially Platonic philosophy and Christian piety are merged into this idea. Since the problem of the unity of The Praise of Folly have been put into question, not a few scholars tried to solve this problem. This article holds that this work has a multi-layered structure as a unified whole. And the underlying principle giving a unity to this structure is Erasmus’s idea of Christian philosohy. Although the foolishness is variously manifested according to each layer, the various meanings of foolishness are converged into Erasmus’s idea of Christian philosophy. In the first layer, rationalistic philosophy is confronted by Epicurean philosophy, which puts an emphasis on the ataraxia and happiness which is foolish to the Stoic wisdom. In the second layer, materialistic Epicurean philosophy is confronted by dualistic Platonic philosophy which admits a intellectual realm, in which real wisdom is located. In the third layer, the foolishness of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ is treated. These three layers are not separate from each other, but organically related. And the idea of Christian philosophy is an ascending motif which encompasses three layers, that is, Epicureanism, Platonism, and Christian Bible.
