ABSTRACT

Restall presented an interesting revenge problem against Dialetheism. The characteristic feature of his revenge problem is that it directly defines the exclusive negation without relying on a metalanguage. In other words, he introduced the exclusive negation based on the inference rules that Dialetheists can accept. We will show that Restall's revenge problem does not hold. In short, his revenge problem has the problem of circularity. In addition, based on the argument against Restall's revenge problem, we will show that to introduce exclusive expressions such as 'just true,' it must be assumed the exclusivity of 'true' and 'false.' That is, in order to introduce an exclusive expression in Dialetheism, it is necessary to assert the exclusiveness of 'true' and 'false' that have already been rejected. It shows that introducing a metalinguistic 'exclusive negation' is also unacceptable. Even if 'just true' is metalinguistically expressed, it still presupposes the exclusivity of 'true' and 'false.'
