AB - This study investigates the significance of Dongcheon(洞天), an ancient site for Taoist cultivation practices. In order to analyze the implications of Dongcheon’s spatial arrangements, it proposes a new methodology called ‘Dongcheon symbol system.’ He devoted his time at Geumryu dongcheon(金流洞天) to studying Taoist scriptures and training in Taoist cultivation.
Kim built a house close to the Geumryu Falls and developed the Dongcheon area. A rock with engraved letters, a ‘turtle rock’, a ‘moon rock’, and an altar for worshiping the sky are located around the Yeongsanjeon Hall of the Naewonam temple. Also, auspicious qi(氣) can be felt in this area. The letters ‘Geumryu dongcheon(金流洞天)’ are inscribed on a broad rock above the falls, and a turtle rock and a rock face are located at the east and west of the Yeongsanjeon Hall. The turtle rock represents the moon on the earth, the yin energy in the Taoist culture. It is, therefore, located where the moon rises in the east. The moon rock, which stands for the dissipation of the yin energy, is located where the moon sets in the northwest. The altar platform built under the ‘elephant rock’ on the mountain’s ridge appears to have been used by Taoist practitioners to perform rituals to worship the sky. The auspicious qi can also be sensed at the location of the Naewonam’s main hall.
Geumryu dongcheon exhibits a range of traits characteristic of a Taoist practice site, formulating what I refer to as the ‘Dongcheon symbol system.’ This indicates that Kim Si-seup performed his Taoist practices in the Geumryu dongcheon. This study also explores the origin of the mountain’s name, “Surak”, and offers a suggestion as to where Kim Si-seup’s home and Naewonam were originally situated.
