ABSTRACT

This study aims to identify the overall inequality experienced by elderly women in their homes and society, and to explore the meaning and essence of life through their voices to find solutions to the problem of poverty among elderly women. To this end, one elderly woman living in Gyeonggi Province was selected as a research participant, and in-depth interviews were used to discover and explore the individual’s direct experiences. As a result of analyzing the in-depth interviews, it was confirmed that the lives of elderly women are greatly influenced by family and social relationships, and are centered around poverty, isolation, burden of support, and emotional difficulties. In particular, family relationships play a dual role in causing mental and emotional pain to elderly women while also being an important driving force in life. In the lives of elderly women, family relationships brought mental and physical pain, but on the contrary, they were relationships that gave them the strength to live. Although the research has limitations in that the personal experiences of the research participants are difficult to generalize, based on these research results, solutions to solve emotional poverty through economic activities and improvement of social networks, and social welfare implications were suggested.
