ABSTRACT

This paper investigates the transformation of female characters in South Korean feminist cinema from the 1990s through the 2020s. It explores how shifting societal, cultural, and political contexts have influenced the portrayal of women in films, reflecting broader changes in gender roles and feminist discourse. The study delineates four distinct periods: the 1990s, characterized by the conflict between traditional values and emerging female images; the 2000s, which showcased a more diverse and assertive range of female roles; the 2010s, focusing on complex portrayals of gender and identity; and the 2020s, emphasizing gender equality and social justice. By analyzing these periods, the research highlights the evolution of feminist cinema in addressing societal issues and advocating for women's rights. The study identifies significant changes in female character portrayal across decades, reflecting shifting societal attitudes toward gender and feminism in South Korea. The study demonstrates how feminist cinema from the 2010s and 2020s engages with gender equality and social justice issues, influenced by broader feminist movements and societal changes.
