ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to analyze the interrelatedness and structural relationships between midlife crisis, aging anxiety, and appearance management behaviors among midlife women, and to examine the mediating effect of appearance management behaviors on the relationship between midlife crisis and aging anxiety. To this end, a survey was conducted among middle-aged women aged 40-65 years living in the Seoul metropolitan area, and the data of 389 participants were used for the final analysis. Structural equation model analysis was conducted using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0 statistical programs. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, midlife crisis was found to have a positive and significant relationship with aging anxiety, while midlife crisis was found to have a negative relationship with appearance care behaviors. In addition, appearance care behaviors were found to have a positive and significant effect on aging anxiety. Second, appearance care behaviors were found to play a partial mediating role in the relationship between midlife crisis and aging anxiety. These findings shed light on the influence of appearance management behaviors on the relationship between midlife crisis and aging anxiety experienced by midlife women, suggesting the need to develop transition education and self-management programs through educational institutions for midlife women to prevent aging maladjustment problems caused by aging anxiety and to intervene with appropriate appearance management behavior variables.
