ABSTRACT

This study analyzes Hoejae Yi Eon-jeok’s life through a periodic perspective, interpreting his academic and political activities within the framework of Myeongrihak (Four Pillars of Destiny). His life exhibits a recurring pattern of political oppression and scholarly achievements, influenced by shifts in Daewoon (Decadal Luck) and Sewoon (Annual Luck). Due to his weak self (Shinyak) and the absence of Inseong (Resource Star), he often faced disadvantages in political conflicts, with his standing fluctuating based on Daewoon and Sewoon combinations. During the Gap-O (甲午) Daewoon, the influence of Jeong-in (正印, Proper Resource) Fire deepened his academic pursuits, sustaining scholarly activities even in exile. This suggests that Inseong does not guarantee political reinstatement but varies in its impact depending on Daewoon and Sewoon interactions. By applying a Myeongrihak-based approach, this study offers a multidimensional view of historical figures’ lives and explores the methodological potential of integrating Myeongrihak with historical and philosophical research.
