ABSTRACT

This study integrates the concept of interactivity in picture books with Clare Painter's theory of visual narratives to establish a novel framework for evaluating picture book interactivity. A case study was conducted on 15 books from the "Chinese Folklore Mythology Picture Book" series, encompassing a total of 450 images, including 17 double-page spreads. The findings reveal that, in terms of physical characteristics, Chinese mythology picture books enrich interactive methods, stimulating readers' tactile and sensory experiences. From a narrative perspective, the diversification of character portrayals and event developments effectively enhances narrative tension within the stories. Additionally, in terms of imagination, the flexible layouts and strategic use of white space stimulate readers' creativity and contribute to strengthening the narrative coherence. Finally, in terms of emotionality, the adaptive use of traditional Chinese art techniques creates a unique narrative atmosphere and deepens readers' emotional immersion. This study offers valuable insights for the creation of Chinese mythology picture books and contributes to the theoretical advancement of Asian picture book research.
