ABSTRACT

This study explored the effects of pair art therapy on self-expression abilities and interpersonal skills of adolescents with Asperger's syndrome and aimed to identify specific patterns of change. A pair art therapy program consisting of 12 sessions, 90 minutes each, once a week from December 2024 to February 2025, was conducted with two adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Data collection involved pre-post assessments using self-expression scales, emotional isolation scales, and interpersonal relationship change scales, along with therapeutic process observations and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Results showed that both participants demonstrated improvement in the content aspects of self-expression, while changes in non-verbal expression were limited. In interpersonal skills, significant enhancement was observed in openness and communication areas. Qualitative analysis revealed a step-by-step change process progressing from initial exploration and observation to intimacy formation and relationship enhancement. Pair art therapy effectively improved verbal self-expression and interpersonal skills of adolescents with Asperger's syndrome through sustained interaction with a fixed partner. This study demonstrated the potential of pair art therapy as an intermediate therapeutic approach that complements the limitations of both individual and group therapy. Future research should focus on effectiveness verification with larger sample sizes and long-term follow-up studies.
