ABSTRACT

This study aims to empirically analyze the impact of enjoyment and engagement on the persistence of language learning in Mobile-Assisted Language Learning, MALL. To achieve this, a survey was designed based on the ARCS motivational theory and flow theory, and a quantitative study was conducted with 185 users of the prominent language-learning applications Duolingo and Malhaeboca. Correlation and regression analyses revealed that both enjoyment and engagement have a significant positive (+) relationship with learning persistence. In particular, feedback, relevance, goal clarity, and self-directed activities emerged as key predictive factors. Additionally, competitive systems and the learning process itself were identified as essential functional elements that foster enjoyment and engagement. These findings suggest that UX design that considers learners' emotions and engagement experiences is effective in enhancing learning persistence. Moreover, this study highlights the necessity of emotion-centered UX strategies for language-learning applications.
