AB - This study is a study on the awareness of the self-reliance program in which protected children live in children's welfare facilities and participate in mandatory self-reliance programs while living in facilities for a long time, and the impact of the situation on the lives of protected children who have to be discharged unconditionally after graduating from high school unless there is a special reason. Focus group interviews were conducted with 12 children living in a child welfare institution located in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Data were analyzed using Giorgi's four-step phenomenological method. The findings revealed five core themes: "Joyful and happy moments," "My dreams," "Anxieties about discharge," "Uncertainty after leaving," and "Reliable supporters." These results suggest that independence preparation programs contribute positively to children's emotional stability, self-esteem, and future outlook. This study highlights the importance of incorporating the voices of children in care when developing and refining child welfare and independence support practices.
